                Headcorn Primary School

 Newsletter May 2009

A message from Mr Walker:

The five weeks of term 5 has flown by. Year 6 took their Key Stage 2 SATs last week and can now enjoy their last few weeks at Headcorn exploring the broader aspects of the curriculum, such as preparing their play. Year 2 have taken their Key Stage 1 SATs. Years 3, 4 and 5 have had their optional SATs.

Please be advised that the arrangements for the Kent Grammar School Testing have been determined for Secondary Transfer 2010.

  • Registration opens: 1 June 2009

  • Registration closes: 10 July 2009

  • Tests for children in Kent Primary Schools : 15/16 September 2009

  • Tests for out of county children: 19 September 2009

  • Assessment decision letters sent to parents: 19 October 2009 to arrive on 20 October 2009

This year parents will be able to register for the Kent Test online via www.kent.gov.uk/ola. If you register online and provide an e-mail address, you will receive your child’s assessment decision via e-mail on 19 October 2009.

KCC encourages parents to utilise the online registration website as this will allow the processes to run much more effectively. You will also receive their assessment decision via e-mail without having to wait for the assessment decision letter. KCC will be publishing information leaflets for parents and registration forms shortly and sending these to you. We should like to invite the parents of children in our current year five to a brief meeting about the 11+ at the school on Wednesday 10th June at 19.00.

We currently have twenty-eight children registered for September’s reception class and only two places left. If you know of anyone who may be looking for a place, please advise them of that.

Joan Drury, a member of our local community and an Anglican Lay Reader, and Gary Homewood, our Methodist Minister, have led assemblies. The Family Trust led an assembly led Wednesday. We are looking forward to our first assembly led by a member of the Jewish community, which we have arranged for July. We are also looking forward to the return of Father Michael J. Woolgate, our Catholic priest who teaches Spirituality and Prayer at the Guilford Seminary, in July.

We learned this week that our Artsmark Gold has been re-accredited for another three years, recognising our staff’s excellent work in the Creative Arts.

May I wish you all a very happy nine-day Whitsun holiday. We look forward to seeing our children back in school on Monday 1st June.

You should have received a letter re ParentMail® yesterday.  We are really keen to promote this system as it is so much more reliable than sending paper messages home so please fill in your form and return to school as soon as possible.  We will be going ‘live’ at the end of June and need to get contact details set up before then.

Thank you

GET FIT, BE HEALTHY AND W.O.W!!!

As part of our Healthy Schools ethos we are encouraged to find ways in which we can support the pupils of Headcorn School in becoming healthy and taking greater care of their bodies and minds.

In endeavouring to do this we would like to start a W.O.W campaign for Term 6. WOW stands for WALK TO SCHOOL ON WEDNESDAY and what we hope to achieve is to have as many children as possible walking to school on Wednesday of every week.

Every child who walks to school on that day will be issued with a stamp and at the end of the week the class with the most children W.O.W ing  will achieve an award. At the end of the term the class with the most children having walked to school on Wednesdays will be added together for the whole 7 weeks of term 6. The children in the winning class will receive a small prize.

I appreciate that some children do not live locally and it is sometimes difficult for them to walk the entire distance to school. However these children can still take part in W.O.W. By parking a short distance away from the school, and no this does not mean Kings Road, then walking the last bit into school children will be counted as having walked to school.

Flora Cooking with Schools

Mrs Casswell is delighted with your response  - we have collected 250 tokens so far which is brilliant!  She is now looking for another 250 so that she can double up on the equipment she already has – so please keep them coming.

Sports News

Volleyball

We unfortunately have had such a poor response for this club that we will be unable to run it this term. I can only apologise to those few children who put their names down early for this club.

Sadly this seems to be growing trend as I know that Mrs Edmonds has also had a great deal of trouble recruiting children for her Cricket and on previous occasions Rugby clubs.  I wanted to reiterate how lucky we are at Headcorn to have so many opportunities after school with so many people willing to give up their free time to deliver these clubs.

Swimming

Hopefully after half term we will be able to use the swimming pool if the weather is good enough

Therefore I wanted to bring to your attention the importance of having the correct equipment in school during swimming sessions.  The fashion at present is for many children to wear their hair longer then they might normally. This is fine during regular activity but whilst swimming it is important that children with exceptionally long fringes or greater then shoulder length hair make sure that this is tightly tied back or that they are in possession of a swimming hat.

This is not only an important health and safety issue as you may be aware there is a strong filtration system working in the pool and we would not want loose hair to become caught in this and an accident ensue but it is also better as children are not constantly moving wet hair out of their way to see what the teacher is asking them to do.

Rugby

CONGRATULATIONS to the Rugby squad who went to the Rugby Festival held at Cranbrook Rugby Club on 7th May. The first team came away unbeaten and overall winners of the whole tournament!

The team will now represent our cluster in the Kent Finals to be held at Aylesford Rugby Club in June.

Well Done and Thank you to Mrs Edmonds and Mrs Smith for all their hard work and endless preparation with the teams.

Football Lenham Tournament

CONGRATULATIONS to all those who represented the school at the annual 5-a-side tournament at Lenham last month. Our ‘A’ squad finished runners-up unfortunately missing out in the final to Leeds and Broomfield .

A special thank you to Mr Donnelly and Mr Crisp for their invaluable help during this very long but enjoyable day!

Yours in Sport

Mr Peters
